It’s time to polish up that resume. Vol State will be hosting dozens of area employers for the Spring Job Career Fair this Wednesday, April 19. The fair provides an opportunity for job seekers to talk directly with the people responsible for hiring. Participants are encouraged to bring several copies of their resumes. Everyone is invited to attend. Many new MTs see that companies require 2+ years experience to be hired and pass that company by without bothering to test with them. It is important to understand the reason why companies say that is because they don’t want people applying who have no training. Yes, they do prefer that you have a couple of years experience, but they will still hire you if you do well on their tests and interview.

If you’re interested pickup a book and download a free compiler. See if you are interested, if you can pick it up and you enjoy it. If so then you may want to consider going into it. This one doesn’t add to the actual game play, but it’s definitely a must-have if you’re a generations-type player, or anyone who plays the game for more than a few days.

Introverted people are often stereotyped as loners – people who don’t like the company of others, and are therefore happiest in jobs where they can work alone. This is a complete misunderstanding of what introversion is! Yes, there are some introverts who fit that description – but there are just as many who don’t.

One career expert, Alison Doyle, estimates the average person changes jobs ten to fifteen times (with an average of 12 job changes) during his or her career. Many workers spend five years or less in every job, so they devote more time and energy transitioning from one job to another.

I try to share this with others too when they question whether or not it is a good thing morally/spiritually to charge a fee for spiritual work and I share that yes, it’s an even exchange and balance of giving energy. It’s nice to hear someone say this too.

Monday, May 2 is my last day of teaching. Not that I will never step into a classroom again, but it marks the end of my full-time employment by Macalester College. My responsibilities for the future will not require any teaching. I am looking forward to the freedom this phased retirement will bring to focus on my writing and other educational activities, but I also approach this date with some sense of loss. Recently, JCAHPO has allowed technicians to use self-study methods to obtain a portion of their CE credits; however, the majority of the credits must be earned through accredited courses. These courses and all certification fees are usually paid for by the physician for whom the technician is employed.

The lack of decent wages in the US is becoming a major problem. The government says there are more jobs and or less people filing for unemployment benefits, maybe, but most jobs now are very low paying. $10 per hour or less is not a living wage, and that is what most retail jobs pay.
