A career is a long term work life that will support a person through retirement, if good saving and investment procedures are used. Some sundials are working longer and longer before retiring, and even going back to work after that. Some even have two to three different career fields in sequence. Today’s workplaces are varied as there are interests. They keep changing and their skills demands keep reinventing as well. When before jobs with low skills make you middle class in Western societies, now many jobs are done by robots. the low skilled jobs hardly pay at all as many temps take it. The good paying jobs often require advanced skills. Many of these jobs are taken by consultants. employees seem to be the odd word now in the business world. Welcome to the Uber Economy. Young grads now have gigs, 2 or 5 of these at the same time, and to the consternation of their parents who are used to regular permanent jobs, they seem to fit in happily.
Age isn’t really a factor to smart managers. Unfortunately there are very small minded HR people and dumb managers. The main thing is to get a great demo reel, get up to speed on what ever specialty you wish to focus on (compositing, lighting, rendering, modeling, animation, etc) and create your credit list. You can list your role and projects and just list as uncredited. Realize your demo reel will have to match the quality of vfx in films.

In addition to books on specific software packages there are plenty of DVD and even online learning available. Do an Internet search for material and reviews by users. Many feature films with effects have extras on their DVD’s that you can rent or buy. Some provide more details than others. Some foreign films do a good job as well. The Japanese film Avalon had some nice behind the scenes.
I have been a part time (cuz I can’t stand it) Optometrist for 25 years (yes, 25 for financial security!!! And fear…) and have ALWAYS been looking for a new career. Have had my hand in entrepreneurship during the same amount of time to work the creative side of my brain. Looking to figure out how to use so many years being in the industry (& a Ton of online marketing and sales knowledge) and get a new career that feeds my soul. Maybe consulting. Any ideas greatly welcomed!
I would suggest you see a career counselour. You can pretty much walk into any votech or college and ask for an assessment. You should be able to first talk to a career counselor. Then you can take some tests that assess your personality. Some of them, such as the Briggs something test, are really good. You need a career counselor, however, to intepret it.
