Architect – Tony Alonso, Regional Chief Architect of the General Services Administration, talks about green buildings and saving energy. While my husband was going to school for his CDL licence, (Commercial Drivers License), he was going to school with a homeless man. This man was living under an overpass and eating at the food bank. He finished the class which is 3 weeks long. He got an over the road job, which means his truck has a sleeper in it, and all he has to pay for is his food. The rest of the money he makes goes in his pocket. I believe that if people are homeless and really want to get out of it they will. There are plenty of things set up out there to help people get jobs and appartments. The Salvation Army is a huge helper for those who want to get on their feet. I should know, my mother has used them plenty of times. The issue is, those who don’t, don’t want to, and those who do, do want to. Unless someone is physically or mentally unstable there is no excuse.
In many areas, working full time for minimum wage does not earn enough to pay rent, utilities and food. While people can combine incomes to rent an apartment they often run into snags such as discovering that the number of working adults required to cover rent and bills combined with their minor children will exceed the number of occupants allowed by their lease. Additionally, many apartment complexes run credit checks which can prevent people with poor credit from renting; things like unpaid medical bills can prevent working people from finding a place to rent.
Job hunting can be grueling. I’ve been unemployed when our sons were babies. Please know I understand and I’ve written this to encourage you and help you have a great perspective when you go for interviews, fill out paperwork, make calls, emails, and reinvent yourself for your new normal.
The shortage was caused by three major problems. First, in the dotcom boom of the 90s, few students were interested in the accounting field. Instead, they chose to focus their education solely on hot new fields like internet technology or online marketing, which left a void in the accounting talent pool coming from the universities. Then, in 2002, the SEC passed the Sarbanes-Oxley act which required far more stringent public corporation accounting standards. This necessitated a sharp increase in the amount of accounting professionals needed, which far outpaced the amount of accounting professionals available. That situation was made worse by the rising tide of Baby Boomers who are now reaching retirement age, and are moving on to a quiet life of gardening and bingo. Put all of those factors together and you’re left with an industry in desperate need.
Commercial break!! Yes, I would like to take just a moment to introduce you to our son’s book: Free Marketing 101 Jim Cockrum was along for the ride, all the moves, and was a teenager when I briefly had my own business. I hired him on a few occasions to help me in this venture.
So why don’t they just get more work, work two or three jobs at a time? Many of them do. But a cluster of minimum wage jobs at a few hours a week doesn’t generally get them very far. Getting enough hours with multiple jobs can be very difficult as well. To make multiple jobs work, employers have to be willing to work with a schedule which accommodates their employee’s other jobs. Finding two (much less more) employers willing to work around other work schedules is difficult enough, but each added job makes finding and keeping a balance even more difficult. It is an extremely rare employer who is willing to schedule an employee around that employee’s schedule at another job.
